wolfjaws this weekend

I am thinking about doing the Wolfjaws this weekend when a buddy of mine is biking around Placid. I was wondering what the fastest route is:

From Ausable Club back through the Rooster Comb?

JBL route?

I need the fastest route from rt. 73 back to rt. 73. I want to be about 5 hours. can i do it?

Your question is very difficult to answer. We don't know you or your abilities.
I was up there this past weekend. Did LWJ, UWJ and Armstrong. To me, these trails aren't for speed. There are numerous rock scrambles where one slip could result in significant injury. We went in via JBL trail to the interior post and up to the wolfjaws notch. That alone is ~5 miles. 1/2 mile up to LWJ then back, almost mile to UWJ and back then out. Each of these climbs is slow and methodical IMHO
AMR route may be alittle shorter though I assume more elevation gain.

My question to you is what's the rush? Enjoy the hike! Or possibly pick another hike where 5hrs is a comfortable amount to complete safely.
Not saying it can't be done, cause it probably can, just be safe.

Thanks for the reply,

I am not that worried about time but I dont want to hold my buddy up either....

I have done 14 of the high peaks, but havent done LWJ or WWJ.

I am in good shape.

The reason I picked that hike is because it looked easier than others, it was convieniant for the person I am riding with, and because I am familiar with AMR because I have done Gothics, Armstrong, Nippletop, Dial, Indian Head....this would be my first solo hike so I wanted to be in somewhat familiar land...really just looking to get out for the day, and if time doesnt cooperate I can always turn back...just really wondered if I could do the loop from Lake Road to rooster comb in about 5 hours. Hope that better explains my situation.

I understand what you're asking. The hike is about 12-13 miles minimum. Not sure what the trail is like out to rooster comb PA. Hear there's some steep ups and downs coming in that way. Figure that doesn't change much for the way out. You can run in Lake Rd, but then you have about a 2000' elevation gain over about 2 miles to the Wolfjaws notch. Then 625' to false summit of UWJ, down 130' then up another 200' to actual summit over .8miles.That's steep and slow moving. Then turn around and go back. Once back at the notch there's 675' up to LWJ thats the same kind of rock scrambles over .5m. From there, you're on your own going out over rooster. I know nothing of that trail. Just its another 5.5 miles over 2 other peaks as you descend.
For me, 13m on flat land in 5hrs would be good.
Best advise, get to the Wolfjaws notch and evaluate the time. Option of only grabbing LWJ and out if time is a factor.

Can't your "buddy" just wait? Not like there's no place to have fun in Placid!

Yeah he will wait I just dont want to be rude....The more I am reading about this hike it looks like a 5-6 hour hike (probably more 6) so he wont have to long. Am I wrong at looking at 6 hours, I just want to give him an estimated time.
