Official "Climbing the 46" Thread & Poll

Our old thread and poll is now closed because it's become out-dated. This is the replacement. I've added a few multiple choice selections .

To learn more about the ADK 46r organization visit their website www.adk46r.org .

For a worksheet to keep track of the hikes, click here. The 46ers like corresponding with hikers as they work on the list. To start correpsondance follow the guidelines on this page.

Winter/Non-Winter

I have 23 done in the winter and one, Marcy done as the state high point in non-winter. I don't think I will be doing the high peaks in non-winter. Can I still get a 46er patch when I finish my winter peaks or do I only get a winter rocker?

Before I am too old?

I have 20 of the 46. Perhaps, before I am too old, I will complete the dream. It's the distance and the other thing, life, that get in the way most often! Alas!

Sledding the 46? I might try Saucering the 46 as welll!

I知 currently at 40. I値l finish eventually, I知 just not sure when. When I do finish, I値l be in the 46* group, because I致e already climbed MacNaughton.

Anything good to say about MacNaughton? I have yet to hear a hiker rave about the climb or views. Hasn't kept us from keeping a few of the less favorite of the 46 (not that we have a choice), but it won't draw me to climb it either...

I climbed MacNaughton from the Wallface Ponds side. The trail to the ponds is a muddy mess almost as bad as the Bradley Pond trail from the Santanoni Range herd path to the lean-to. The bushwhack part was a very steep climb (over 800 feet in less than .5 mile) straight up the side of the mountain through some thick spruce with a lot of small ledges. I did find a rock outcrop with a nice view toward the Santanoni Range, but didn't have time to look for more views. Maybe I'll find more if I go back.

How long ago was that? I've heard there's a herd path now... although the reports I've read say it's still a bit thick in places.

I climbed it two years ago. I had heard that there was a herd path too, which was why I went up from that side. The only path I found was one that went around the pond and ended in a swamp and there was a path along the summit ridge. I found nothing else in between. This may have changed over the past two years.

Thanks Dick, did some scrounging around (following links from that thread) and found that the herd path is about half a mile past Hunter Pond heading towards Duck Hole. You can clearly see the drainage on the latest WGS84 topo. It actually doesn't sound too bad, so maybe someday I will actually climb it.

I've done 11 plus MacNaughton. Slowly but surely I plan on finishing. I have no idea when I'll actually finish...

We did MacNaughton from the Duck Hole trail side, mostly travelling in the brook. It was not a really bad whack after the top of the brook.

I've climbed MacNaughton 3 times, all from the Upper Works/Hunter Pond side. It's a nice, fairly easy hike, reminds me a lot of Marshall via Herbert Brook, with a lot of rock slabs in the brook to walk on. The herd path above the brook is fairly obvious, although it didn't seem much more obvious from 1990 to 1999. Not much of a view, but here's a pic from the summit

Why isn't none a choice in the poll?

Abstention votes don't count, in which case we could simply put 5-6 billion since most people in the world never even heard of the Adirondacks.
