2019 Ice Out Prediction

Given that L-C just froze over completely two days ago it seems absolutely reasonable to start the guessing game as to when the backcountry ponds might be fish-able. I'm going with 20 April...

VT , your probably right on, but, the small ponds around here in Lake Clear may be even later than that, so I'll go with April 31

I am guessing ice out will be April 29th this year. There has been a lot of ice this season and it will last almost as long as last year's late ice out. I suggest we use the Mirror Lake ice out as the standard since it is well established as an ice out measure.

I will go with April 27th, since we have had such a cold
Winter! Fortunately, Eagle Crg is hiding down in Corpus
Christi where he has not caught any fish in the surf.

I’ll go with April 27.

To bad EagleCrag hasn’t caught any fish. Maybe he can try bass fishing? They get huge down there.

this would depend on what area / pond. There is at least a week difference from say ponds in Pharoh lake area to ones in SRCA. I fished a pond jst north of PLW on 4/1 one year and SRCA ponds didn't go out until 4/14. Depth, elevation, location all make a difference.

This is why I suggested using the Mirror Lake location near Lake Placid. Everyone will be guessing based on a common elevation and location for apples to apples comparison purposes. I was ice fishing on Oneida Lake on Saturday and drilled about 18 inches but it can always go fast if things warm up quickly.

Even within SRCA there are some ponds that will be ice free while others close by may be iced up.

I can't choose a day for SRCA but Mirror Lake will be out by the 3rd week of April.

I'm with Stillhunter. Let's use Mirror Lake as our gauge.

Well as a Saranac Lake resident i can do my best to keep everyone posted. I try to fish at least one day a week if not more. Tend to travel a bit to champs tribs early in the year to scratch the itch while we wait for ice out haha.

Mirror lake will be ice free on April 17th. Not a day before, not a day after. What time will it go out? How the hell should I know

Bog River/Lows Lake

I am interested in this area, as I hope to do my first paddling trip there the week of April 15. I am thinking it's a long shot this year and I might be backpacking in the PLW instead.
