I'm a good swimmer, but that won't help if I'm knocked unconscious during a spill. If I have to also rescue my friend who wasn't wearing theirs, I'll thank the PFD....

Entirely different area, but if you're willing to visit the Catskills, Echo Lake is a great spot with an easy hike in if you go from Platte Clove....

On a positive note, I just spent Columbus Day weekend at Pharaoh Lake, which has in the past had some of the trashiest sites I've ever seen (though nothing will ever beat Nine Corner, I think/hope)....

I've been using weedblock for ground cloth which has the benefits of being extremely light, easy to cut to size, and cheap. I can see a sheet of that inside the tent helping to keep wear down....

If not, there are three designated campsites at the NW corner of the lake. Unless you're dead set on staying at a lean-to, they're right on your path....
