The mighty Fish hawk

Anyone seen this video on an osprey catching fish? (The Osprey is also called a fish hawk). It's the only hawk whose diet consists solely of fresh fish.

First sequence he grabs a bunch of fish.

Second sequence he grabs a camoflaged flounder right off the bottom.

Third sequence: He grabs a salmon so big he can barely gain any altitude.

Absolutely stunning video, one of the best I have ever seen.

At the risk of being corrective, the osprey is not a hawk or eagle member.

According to encyclopedia Brittanica it is a long winged hawk.

According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology:
"Ospreys are very large, distinctively shaped hawks".

They are one of the definitive sources for information and identification of birds.

What information leads you to believe that they are not a hawk?

Thanks, Redhawk -- great video. That last one really had to work to carry off the fish!

One of my favorite wildlife viewings was an osprey & a raven, years ago at Riddle Lake in Yellowstone. I first saw the osprey, in flight with fish, being harassed by a raven. It attacked so viciously that the osprey dropped the fish, which the raven caught in midair. Of course the osprey now had its talons free & wasn't so weighed down, so it lit after the raven. The raven fled into the woods down the lake, with osprey in hot pursuit. I don't know the outcome but just the part I saw was dramatic.
