Too early to start ADK lake and pond ice out report???

Planning to go up to LP last weekend in April, not looking good at this point based on what I see in the Finger lakes.

In the Hudson Valley, most bodies of stillwater have ice as well. My father who lives in northern NY north of the blue line has been doing some reconnaissance trips for me there and reports much ice on local bodies of stillwater.

From what i see on the satellite images, the only body of water that appears to be breaking up is Lake Champlain.

Even most of the flatwater sections of Otter Creek are still iced over. Those will go out today or tomorrow.

We might be fishing by August:mad:

been an awful awful winter, but once it gets started it'll go quick.

I usually planned fishing trips about the third week in April for the remote ponds.

The "New Age"??
I've trudged into ponds that were still ice covered.
The "new age'?
I'll opt out.

Wow, that chunk of ice on Ontario must be 30 miles wide!

Can anyone tell me where and how I can access the current satellite pictures Boreal Fox and brookies4ever posted? It seems pretty powerful/useful and could potentially help me reduce my carbon footprint.

It works kinda like google earth/maps. zoom in on the area you want to see.

I'm not sure that Ole Man Winter has retired for the year. It's only April. About three years ago two weeks before Memorial Day most of the peaks became snow covered overnight. Fortunately it all melted by the afternoon. But ponds can still skim freeze over.

Boreal: It looks like Mud Pond is still frozen over.

@iangoround - Thanks for the info.

A couple caveats, satellite image is rendered worthless on a cloudy day and b)
zoom in doesn't work so well on the smaller ADK ponds.

Agreed.
After playing around with it for a bit, the zoom capability (limited to 5 miles) isn't quite what it needs to be like Google Earth/Maps for zooming into the smaller ADK ponds. Nonetheless, still another tool to add to the arsenal.

I've zoomed in. Resolution doesn't get better but you can see Lake Piseco and Lake Sacandaga for reference. Obviously Mud Pond is too small to properly make out but it's certainly still frozen

Saw some areas where holes have melted through. Could see 4-6 inches of ice surrounding them. The recent rain helped expand these holes over thursday night. Streams are swelling, can hear the water gurgling below the snow pack. Won't be long now!

Couple ice fishermen had the pickups out in the middle of Lake Colby yesterday, I'd guess it will be a while before they launch their canoes on the lake.

Had a great X/C ski into Avalanche Lake on Wed. , still winter in the high peaks
