This seems to be a trend unfortunately, but what are these kids to do? When the only real employment is seasonal, no real economy up there, I think most people unless their willing to commute long distances just can't justify the cost versus the gain of living there. IMO however I don't think they are leaving just for lack of hi-speed Internet and mobile phones as is stated, it is bigger than that!

I too don't think lack of cell phone use is what's driving them out. Though, on the other hand, I won't change from Verizon because, I know I've had more luck with them in the dacks than other providers.

I think economy and taxes take a toll. It's really too bad too, as that's how places become 'ghost towns'.

The decline in Hamilton County started well before the popularity of cell phones and other electronic devices.
There isn't any industry, other then tourism and since there is no development in the park, that probably won't change.

Who knows, the turn around may happen when people are seeking a place to get away from all the instant communication that seems to be a necessity.

While the habitat sucks for younger people it's ideal for the 65+ crowd that can be somewhat self-sufficient. As taxes and cost of living goes it is generally very reasonable. Price of gas is a real big tax on these folks though.

I took a double take at the 5k population, that's unbelievable!

The distance to doctors and hospitals for the 65+ group is a major concern that will probably make them not so apt to move in.

Also I've got believe that the ways of easy going taxes will more than likely change.hence causing the area to be even less desirable even for the diehards.

Of all the counties, Hamilton should see less of an increase. Schools and pensions seem to be the big problem for other counties which seems the least of Hamilton's concerns. And remember the tax base is a lot bigger than the permanent residents.

The services, particularly healthcare is a concern but I guess the sweet spot is retirement age to the age that one requires significant healthcare help.

I believe if these population levels actually come to fruition counties will more than likely need to merge, there just will not be enough tax base left to operate.

A very appropriate quote for this thread. Indeed.

I lived in Hamilton County for 13 years. Its easy to understand why young folks leave, and it surely is not cell phones and laptops driving it. Its a hardscrabble lifestyle, and that has very limited appeal to someone looking to acquire a decent job, car, home in the long run, to simply advance their station in life. The rather limited "social opportunities" play a big role also. I think its a "how ya gonna keep them down on the farm" kinda thing.
